Golden Era of Black Business:

The era from 1900's to 1930 is referred to the Golden era of black business. The reason for the rise of black owned businesses is due to Jim Crow Laws which forced African Americans to form more insulated communities which led to a boom in entrepreneurship.

Transformational Leadership:

Transformational leadership is defined as a leadership approach that causes change in individuals and social systems pushing towards developing followers into leaders. Maggie Lena Walker embodies what a transformational is and does. From inspiring many black women to rise up from oppression, encourages followers to think progressively and challenge the status quo.

Social Entrepreneurship: 

Maggie Lena walker went above and beyond to address social issues. From opening the Saint Luke Penny Savings Bank in Richmond that helped African Americans open up savings account without being discriminated or rejected, and are able to deposit small amounts of money with it being as low as 5 cents. She was also an active member of the Independent Order of Saint Luke which dedicated itself to the social and financial advancement of African Americans.

Management:


Maggie Lena Walker worked her way up the ranks of the Independent Order of St. Luke. where she was able to rebuild the order, doubling the memberships and being able to manage over 100,000 members and was the only woman at the time leading the major black fraternal order. Not only this, she was able to open and manage a bank with 50 individuals known as the St. Luke Penny Savings Bank.

Servant Leadership:


Maggie Lena Walker was a prime example of what a servant leader is. She gave and served those in her community through her acts of teaching, informing and being part of an organization. She became a teacher and taught kids at an older age, became a member of what was known as the NAACP where she was making efforts to improve the civil rights of African Americans.
