Audition Notice

THE PENNY EXECUTIVE is the life story of Maggie Lena Walker, America’s first black woman to charter a bank and be a bank president. A businesswoman, community leader, and early civil rights activist in post-Civil War Richmond, Va, Walker founded a newspaper, advocated for women’s rights, and fought for education reform in the black community. She was a true Renaissance Woman!

As a 1-woman show, this play requires a black actress with fearless range, impeccable timing, clarity of character work, and specificity of movement and gesture. You will not only be playing Walker from a young girl to old woman, but also the narrator of the piece, as well as over a dozen men, women, friends, and family members.

BE BOLD!
